Wondering if You're Psychic? Read This.

Updated: Oct 31

Disclaimer: For the purposes of this blog post, we are working from the presupposition that ESP does exist (according to these stats, two-thirds of Americans believe in ESP). I will include evidence-based, science-backed resources on ESP at the end of the post for further reading.

We are all spiritual beings incarnated in physical form, sharing the human experience together in this material plane. Tapping into the inherent abilities we each possess, those which transcend our five senses, is a journey of self-discovery followed by practice.

Although we are all intuitive, some of us have a stronger connection to Source than others. This is due to a combination of factors; namely, the inherent capacity of your natural-born gifts, your life experiences and their impact on expressing (or suppressing) those gifts, and how you develop your intuition through focused intention on a consistent basis. Although our unique capacities may differ, we all have the power to connect with our intuition and higher self.

Extrasensory perception (ESP) is defined by Merriam-Webster as “perception (as in telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition) that involves awareness of information about events external to the self not gained through the senses and not deducible from previous experience.”

Today we will focus on the four main types of ESP, their respective characteristics, and ways to tap into and develop your own ESP.

Before we dive in, I want to mention that all ESP abilities are often very subtle and the information that comes through ESP can be indiscernible from your own inner voice. However, once you begin to pay attention, you will find a few key differences to help differentiate between the two.

First, the information transmitted via ESP will ‘pop up’ out of nowhere and leave just as quickly, as opposed to an internal thought which lingers and requires thinking, processing, and interpretation on your part.

The second main difference is that ESP information can feel evasive and just out of reach, as though it is an amorphous energy floating in the back of your head or just behind you. Typically, your own internal dialogue is front and center whereas ESP may seem like distant faint ‘whisper’ that is barely noticeable.

Thirdly, the energetic vibration of ESP versus internal thought is entirely different. It has been my experience that ESP information, regardless of the type, comes through as what can best be described as a telepathic, energetic download. It feels preverbal in a sense, whereas my own thoughts are more tangible and come in ‘louder.’

The 4 Main Types of ESP:

Claircognizance, Clairvoyance, Clairsentience, Clairaudience

Type 1 – Claircognizance

Claircognizance is an inner ‘knowing’ and includes both precognition and retrocognition. Claircognizant messages often come in an instant and out of nowhere.

Precognition is the ability to intuitively know about a future event before the event has occurred and can feel like a flash of inspiration or insight. If you have ever thought about someone out of the blue only to hear from them a short time after or had a dream of an event that later occurred, you have experienced precognition.

Retrocognition is the ability to see into the past. People with retrocognition can recognize people, places and events from the past despite having no association or knowledge of them and can describe past events in precise detail.

Retrocognition is associated with Déjà vu, which is a sense of already having experienced a novel situation. As discussed here, science has attempted to make sense of this phenomenon from a ‘rational’ perspective for decades. While scientists have provided some potentially plausible theories, there is no conclusive evidence to support them.

Conversely, quantum physics has evidence that extends beyond the scope of ‘natural’ science in support of déjà vu. Retro causality is a theory in quantum physics that essentially demonstrates how a decision made in the present can influence something from the past. You can read more about this theory here.

Signs of Claircognizance

1. Using the phrase “I know.”

2. Coming up with solutions and answers easily, even in unfamiliar or novel scenarios.

3. Experiencing Deja-vu.

4. Knowing how to do things without any practice or training.

5. Frequently relying upon ‘gut’ instinct because it is always accurate.

6. Interrupting people in conversation because you already know what they are going to say (and you are always right).

Type 2 – Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance means “clear seeing” and refers to the ability to see information about an object, person, scenario, location, or event in the past, present, or future. Clairvoyant insights are no exception to the subtle nature of ESP, making them difficult to recognize. For example, one may be receiving clairvoyant information but think that it is merely a daydream or their imagination.

Clairvoyant insights can be seen externally as light or through your third eye. You may see orbs floating in the air, flashes of light in your periphery vision, and sometimes you may even be able to see the individual molecular particles that comprise the atmosphere.

Signs of Clairvoyancy

1. Using the phrase “I see.”

2. Seeing people’s energy field (aura).

3. Highly active imagination, daydreaming frequently.

4. Seeing symbols, colors, images or visions in your ‘mind’s eye.’

5. Visual learner.

6. Regularly experiencing vivid dreams or lucid dreaming.

7. Seeing things like mist, fog, or shadows that others cannot see.

8. Highly affected by aesthetics (moved by art or the beauty in nature; an affinity for home décor, graphic design, and other forms of aesthetic expression).

9. Creative hobbies (painting, drawing, or photography).

10. Natural understanding of how things are interconnected.

Type 3 – Clairsentience

Clairsentience is the ability of ‘clear feeling.’ People with clairsentience are highly sensitive to energy and can feel the past, present, or future sensations and emotions of another person, place, or thing on a visceral level.

Clairsentience is associated with empaths, or highly sensitive people. Anyone with clairsentience is an empath, but not all empaths are clairsentient. While they are both deeply sensitive to the energy around them, clairsentients go beyond feeling or experiencing the emotions of others. A person with clairsentience will gain insight from the energy, such as the thoughts, decisions or events that the person is or will be experiencing. While empaths are highly sensitive to their immediate environment, someone with clairsentience can feel the energy and thoughts of the people who they are energetically connected to even if they are not physically in the same location. (I believe empaths are often if not always clairsentients who have not yet learned how to utilize the ability in a more conscious and directed way).

People who are clairsentient are often able to predict someone’s future through their deep attunement to that person’s energy; therefore, clairsentience can overlap with Claircognizance.

Signs of Clairsentience

1. Using the phrases “I feel” or “I sense.”

2. Easily overwhelmed by busy places.

3. Needing alone time to recharge.

4. Picking up on the mood, thoughts, and intentions of others.

5. Getting ‘gut’ feelings about people, places and things.

6. Can’t own old possessions without feeling the emotional residue of the previous owner.

7. Sensitive to temperature changes, sometimes due to the energetic presence of spirits.

8. Sensitive to any subtle changes within your home or workspace.

Type 4 – Clairaudience

Clairaudience means “clear hearing.” Clairaudient information can come from within your mind or externally to you. People often describe receiving this type of information as ‘tuning into a radio station.’ While this is a useful analogy, I think it is important to expand upon and note that it is like tuning into a radio station in a remote area or while driving through mountains; your reception is inconsistent and choppy. It is more likely to experience random words or sounds, particularly when first developing your abilities, than it is to tap into a clear, uninterrupted stream of information.

Signs of Clairaudience

1. Using the phrase “I hear you.”

2. Auditory learner.

3. Hearing ringing or feeling pressure in your ears.

4. Having very good hearing in a literal sense; ability to hear sounds that are very faint, like noises coming from another room that no one else notices.

5. Thinking out loud to yourself.
